Dear Friends,

I am winding down completing my master’s degree and it’s time to work on my applied research project. I’d like to share a bit about that with you.

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact that affirmations have on students’ self-perception and academic motivation.

As an independent educator I have worked with many students who needed reminders of their brilliance before they could see it for themselves. There have been students who are very critical of themselves, or they have anxiety about engaging with academic materials simply because they’ve been criticized or embarrassed in some way in the classroom. I’ve even worked with students who had to leave the traditional school system because of this.

What can be done? I don’t know. But I would like to explore if students can help themselves learning how to affirm their own worth. Therefore, my research proposal is focused on the following questions:

1.What effect does saying daily affirmations have on one’s self-perception?

2. What effect does saying daily affirmations have on one’s motivation to learn?

I am looking for students ages 5-12 who attend school in any manner. That could be a traditional school, homeschool, a virtual public school, or those who are privately tutored.

To begin, the child will be asked to answer a brief survey about their self-esteem. The survey will be submitted online. Afterward the child will choose if they prefer to say a list of affirmations each day, or if they would prefer to sing along with the provided mp3. The child will then say or sing the affirmations for 14 days (or as many days as possible over a 14 day period).

At the end of the time period, the student will answer the same self-esteem survey via an online form. This final survey will also ask the child how often they completed the affirmations, if they had any challenges with saying the affirmations, if they have any other comments about their self-esteem or this study. The child may decline to answer any or all of the questions.

The study will take place during April 2022. If you are interested in participating, please fill out this form to let me know.

I will then forward you the information at the appropriate time. If you know someone who might be interested, please forward this link to them.

Thank you.

The intent of this newsletter is to increase awareness of available educational options in order to encourage environments where students can align to their true gifts and talents.
